Located in a quiet, leafy neighborhood outside of downtown Vancouver, Pacific Coliseum is one of the last of its kind. Around the world, 1960's and 70's-era concrete panel covered arenas, the kind pioneered by the Astrodome in Houston, are more and more often being demolished to make room for modern facilities that are more glitzy, versatile, and friendlier to both the environment and visitors.

In its heyday, though, Pacific Coliseum was the apple of the Vancouver sports world's eye as it hosted the Canucks ice hockey team both when it was part of the Pacific Coast Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and finally when it became part of the National Hockey League. In 2007, the facility underwent a $20 million upgrade in anticipation of being used as a competition venue for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Beyond that, in spite of its age, Pacific Coliseum is expected to continue serving as one of Vancouver's major points for concerts, sporting events, trade shows, and other gatherings.
