UBC Thunderbird Arena is a massive new multi-purpose facility built around a more modest, yet incredibly historic, older hockey facility.

The old building was Father Bauer Arena, built in 1963 and named after the priest who helped organize Canada's first national hockey team for the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Thought neither the priest, nor his team, stayed in Vancouver long his name remained synonymous with local hockey for decades until in 2006 work began on a new Olympic-caliber arena.

The new facility features three ice rinks -- the original, yet refurbished rink, plus a practice rink, and a competition rink.
