This is one of Seattle's often overlooked pieces of film history. This building was built as a distribution facility for movies made by the RKO studios. From this building, the latest features from Hollywood and New York were sent to theaters across the northwest. Such "film exchanges" were vital points for spreading culture to the corners of America, and helped develop the Hollywood film studios and theater networks. The owners of larger theaters that could afford trips to Seattle would preview RKO movies in this building's theater, before taking them back to their home towns. The owners of smaller theaters relied on salesmen who made circuits from Alaska to Montana to pitch RKO films without the benefit of a preview.

As the movie industry's distribution models modernized, the notion of Seattle as a movie hub became antiquated, and the buildings of Film Row were closed, carved up, and reused. This building is now three different businesses, yet retains enough visual integrity to identify itself as formerly being one composition. In addition to its art deco styling, keep an eye out for dragons and ships in the details, as well as once-exotic yin-and-yang and Moorish patterns.
