Like many older buildings in the Belltown neighborhood, this structure's original purpose has been lost to time. Based on its design, and some of the building materials used, some believe this was originally a stable for horse-drawn carriages in downtown Seattle. Even its original date of construction has been lost, but is estimated to be around 1907.

By the 1920's, America had mostly converted from horses to the automobile, and this stable was converted into a service station to repair the horseless carriages. The center bay of this building has been a garage door for as long as anyone can remember. A second garage portal has since been converted into a regular entrance for pedestrians.

Another clue about this building's history can be seen around the back, where the door doesn't quite meet the ground, and the windows sit unusually high. It is possible this is the result of the massive change in the neighborhood's topography caused by the Denny Regrade, which turned one of Seattle's hills into mostly flat land. Also visible at the rear is a massive vertical skylight, which allows natural light to penetrate the building.
