Another of the American capitols inspired by Greek architecture and the capitol in Washington, DC. Its main element is the dome, which at 287 feet is one of the largest in the world built without steel support. This dome cracked badly during a 6.8 earthquake on 28 February, 2001. Ten of the capitol's columns also moved at least four inches. The building was evacuated until it could be secured.

Quick Facts
Notes
    >There are 42 steps leading to the entrance, symbolizing the fact that Washington was the 42nd state in the union.
    >The granite for the capitol steps came from Index, Washington. The marble rotunda and vestibule floors come from Alaska. The marble walls in the reception room are from Italy. The floor is from Belgium.
    >Inside the capitol are statues of Marcus Whitman, a missionary who brought settlers to Washington Territory; and Mother Joseph, a Canadian nun who founded dozens of hospitals, schools, and orphanages on the frontier. The original statues are on display in the capitol rotunda in Washington, DC. The ones in Washington state are replicas.

Your Thoughts

There is one comment.

An astounding building, in particular the marble. On my visitthere was blue tape on the cracks caused by the eathquake. I very much look forward to a return visit.
